Paine, Askoak power Newhalen's efforts in Bethel
Jared Paine and Kiesha Askoak turned in outstanding efforts this past weekend and helped their respective teams do well at the Bethel Invitational Wresting Tournament.
Paine highlighted the Malamates' efforts in the varsity division by placing third in the boys' 145-pound weight classification.
After dropping his first match to eventual champion Westley Bockert of Lathrop, Paine rallied back to win his next three matches, including a win over Scammon Bay's Adaon Charlie in the third-place bout.
Backed by Paine's efforts, Newhalen rolled up 17 points in the varsity division and finished 14th in the team standings.
Lathrop won the team title with 284 points. South Anchorage and Bethel were second and third, respectively.
Askoak highlighted a solid showing by the Newhalen junior high/elementary teams. She finished second in the 220-pound weight classification. Her only loss came in the finals against Gladys Jung's Leah Valadez.
Aileen Lester also did well for Newhalen. She finished with a 2-2 record and placed fourth in the 135-pound standings.
Other Newhalen grapplers participating in the meet included Pagan Lester, Nicholas Wassillie, Sam Wren and Bryce Olympic.
