Raiders wrestle to Pool C title at King of the Mountain
The Unalaska Raiders made sure everyone took notice of their skills on the mat this past weekend at the King of the Mountain wrestling tournament in Seward. The Raiders had four wrestlers go unbeaten in their weight classifications and streaked to the Pool C division title. More than 20 teams from across the state competed in the tournament, which was held on Oct. 27-28.
Senior Mathew Faoasau and sophomore John Esnardo highlighted the Raiders' efforts. Both wrestled their way to perfect 4-0 records, and keyed a UHS squad that won a staggering 31 of its 37 matches.
Kenai Central finished second in the Pool C standings. Glennallen edged out Voznesenka and Nikiski for third.
Faoasau starred in the heavyweight division by going unbeaten in the 285-pound classification. Esnardo went 4-0 in the 120-pound ranks. Blaine Henning and Quinnton Parker also walked away from the tournament with unblemished marks. Henning wrestled his way to a 3-0 mark in the 126-pound ranks. Parker, a senior, went 3-0 in the 220-pound class.
Talson Shaishnikoff, Dustin Ruckman and Chris Garcia all netted three victories. Shaishnikoff was 3-1 in the 182-pound ranks. Ruckman and Garcia were 3-1 in the 132- and 170-pound classes, respectively. Sophomore Curtis Jeppeson also did well, going 3-1 in the 113-pound bracket.
Juniors Alex Esnardo and Seth Henning both went 2-2.
