OPINION: A new fisherman on the way

Well I'm glad I didn't put on a dark suit, shine my shoes, and walk off the end of a pier. When I read on Facebook that I didn't have a job anymore I was not happy. Moving here was so much work that I wasn't ready to hear it was time to move back. In fact, I said to myself 'no way, I'm not moving again!' For a week I was trying to decide how to re-invent myself and then I got the mystery call telling me the Dutch Harbor Fisherman would live on. That was a close shave!

So whatÕs next? IÕm not sure how many more issues of the paper we'll publish under the current owner. I probably won't know until I read on Facebook that publication has ceased. Once the new regime has been installed change will come slowly. For sure there will be more local news than there has been. That's because there's a reporter actually living here. But the non-local content, hopefully, will have a direct connection to life in the Aleutians. I'll begin lining up contacts on the other islands, including the Pribilofs, and I'm sure they'll be keeping us up to date on what's happening in those windy places. Those working or studying Outside or on the road system will be reading online, I hope, and the Fisherman will be glad to hear from them and see digital photos coming via email. I hope to make The Fisherman a local paper with a long arm.

What would the readers like to read and see? Send me an email at james@jamesmason.us. Once school gets rolling there'll be lots of coverage of education and school activities. For sure Law and Order will continue to be the crown jewel of the newspaper. Our crimes are just too interesting not to be in the paper. Nothing scary. Our crimes are mostly about having too much fun.

I'm looking forward to a future with plenty of news coverage. I hope that between Radio KUCB and the Dutch Harbor Fisherman everybody in the region will feel like they know whatÕs going on.
