A field hearing on the future of the Coast Guard in Alaska on Friday at the University of Alaska Anchorage will feature testimony from Admiral Robert J. Papp, commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard, Sen. Mark Begich, D-Alaska announced today.

Begich is the chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee Subcommittee on Oceans, Atmosphere, Fisheries and Coast Guard, which is hosting the public session.

A number of issues in Alaska, from potential oil and gas development in the Arctic, to fisheries and maritime commerce, involve the Coast Guard, Begich said.

In addition to the formal hearing, there will be a listening session covering support for Coast Guard service members and families, including housing, medical and other family resources. Other issues to be addressed include regulations for fishing vessels, oil spill response vessels and licensing of merchant mariners.

The field hearing and listening session are both open to the public. They will be held from 10 a.m. to 11:30 am at the UAA Gorsuch Commons, Room 107.
