Sand Point boys go out in style
March 2nd 1:03 pm | Van Williams
Nasty weather nearly canceled Senior Night for the Sand Point boys basketball team after district rival King Cove was unable to fly to town for a weekend series.
But members of the community stepped in with a much-needed assist.
They gathered a makeshift team of alumni and school staff to make sure the Eagles had their moment in the spotlight.
Seniors CJ Roby and Tim Lundren led the charge in an 81-63 victory, allowing Sand Point to end the season in style.
"It was a fun game for the fans and the team," said coach David Mitchell.
Roby pumped in a game-high 27 points with Lundren and teammate Cory Cheek each scoring 18. Matthew Bravo added 15 points.
"The seniors played great," Mitchell said.
The same could be said for the whole team this season.
The Eagles won 15 of 27 games and finished second in the district behind King Cove.
The T-Jacks won the season series, earning the right to represent the district at the region tournament.
Nonetheless, Mitchell wanted another crack at King Cove.
"It is a shame that they were not able to have the playoff as schedule," he said. "As is often the case in Sand Point the weather can become a bigger factor than the teams we play.
"King Cove played well this year and won the games they needed to. They have a good team who will represent the district well."
Even if the Eagles didn't advance to regions, they have nothing to hang their heads about.
They posted a double-figure win total despite missing a key player for part of the season.
"The ball players have much to be proud of. They have won a lot of games this year and have only gotten better," Mitchell said. "They were strong and overcame many obstacles this year."
