It was the perfect way to end a perfect weekend.
The Unalaska High School boys varsity basketball team swept a weekend series with Aleutian Chain rivals Sand Point and King Cove, capped with a dominating defensive demonstration Saturday on Senior Night.
Before the game seniors Eric Do, Zach Call, John Sugabo and Kim Balbarino were honored for their contributions to the program. Them they went out and paid tribute to the crowd with a wire-to-wire victory.
Unalaska won 79-32 behind Sugabo's 20-point performance. The Raiders led from start to finish, carrying a commanding 39-19 cushion into halftime.
"A tough half-court, man-to-man defense and a relentless running game seemed to be too much for the Eagles on this night," said Unalaska coach Jim Wilson.
Sugabo paced four double-digit scorers. The others were Sebastian Graves (12), Do (10) and J.J. Fernandez (11).
Call, one of the unsung heroes of the club, led a stingy defensive effort from the perimeter by denying passing lanes and soft post feeds.
Sand Point's Brandon Gunderson led all scorers with 13 points.
Unalaska also beat King Cover twice in as many nights.
The Raiders won 50-35 after building a comfortable 24-point halftime lead. The inside tandem of Do and Andrew Seaman in addition to the outside game of Fernandez and the defensive pressure by Call keyed the runaway victory.
King Cove's Cody Mack pumped in 13 points.
The next game saw Unalaska win 62-36 behind double-figure scorers Seaman (19) and Fernandez (12).
Josiah Mack led the T-jacks with 17 points.
Sand Point enjoyed success against the Unalaska JV and C teams, thanks to the solid play of Tim Lungren, Mathew Bravo and Brandon Gunderson. Unalaska got big games from Jayvee Ugale, Douglas Krukoff, Alan Cole and Jessie Ugale.
King Cove also beat the Unalaska JV and C teams, led by star players PJ Hamilton, Jaimen Newman and the Mack boys.
In girls action, Unalaska beat Sand Point 72-30 despite April Wilson's 20 points.
