It didn't take long for rookie head coach Jordyn Danner to make an impact with the Barrow girls basketball team.

The Lady Whalers have won nine straight games and three consecutive tournaments, turning heads along the way.

They were rewarded for a 9-0 start by earning the No. 1 ranking for Class 3A girls in the inaugural Alaska Association of Basketball Coaches Poll released today.

The Lady Whalers are led by five seniors, including all-state guard Nicole Smith and all-state tournament pick Melissa Gerke.

Defending Southeast champion Sitka is No. 2, followed by Galena, Bethel and Kotzebue.

Kotzebue has excelled this season behind the 1-2 punch of Christina Fields and Heather Gallahorn. A few weeks ago the Lady Huskies won the Little Norway tournament.

In the 3A boys poll, Monroe Catholic leads the charge. The Fairbanks squad has won seven of eight games behind a stingy defense allowing just 35 points per game.

The Nome Nanooks are next at 7-1 on the heels of winning the Subway Showdown last week.

The Barrow boys are not ranked despite winning six of nine games.
