Aug. 16 is deadline to file for local government seats

The City of Unalaska will hold general municipal elections on Oct. 5. Persons interested in running for mayor, city council member (two seats) or school board member (two seats) must file a declaration of candidacy form by Aug. 16. Forms are available at Unalaska City Hall, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Mondays through Fridays. For more information, call the city clerk's office at 581-1251.

Get set for cross-country running season

The Unalaska Raiders cross-country running season will begin at 4 p.m. Aug. 17. All high school students interested in running this year must have a physical and paperwork turned in by the start of the first practice. Paperwork can be picked up at the Unalaska High School office starting Aug. 9. Coach Alan Haskins encourages runners to run before the first day of practice.

Share your culture

Celebrate Unalaska's many cultures during the Heart of the Aleutians Festival on Aug. 21 at Kelty Field. The deadline to reserve a booth is Aug. 16. All food booths (except baked goods) are required to have a DEC permit. Forms are available at the Aquatics Center front desk. Booths are free for registered non-profits; $20 others.

City plans workshop on comprehensive plan

The public is invited to a workshop on Unalaska's Draft Comprehensive Plan, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Aug. 7 in council chambers at Unalaska City Hall. Doyle Hyett, Dolores Palma, Martin Jarret and city planning staff will present at the workshop. All are encouraged to attend. For more information, call the Department of Planning at 581-3100.

Sign up now for summer classic

Ages 16 and older are invited to run or cycle their way through the second-annual Bobby Johnson Summer Bay Classic Race on Aug. 7. The course, a 13.5-mile trek over scenic Summer Bay Pass, begins at the PCR Community Center and ends at Tutiakoff Park. Cost is $20 with commemorative T-shirt, $10 without. Teams are welcome, call 581-1297 to register.

Raffle benefits local nonprofits

The Alaska Peace Officers Association is selling raffle tickets to raise funds for community nonprofit organizations. Three winners for cash prizes of $500, $1,000 and $2,500 will be drawn at 6 p.m. Aug. 6 at the Grand Aleutian Hotel. Tickets, $20, are available at the Unalaska Public Safety Department, 29 Safety Way. The raffle is sponsored by the Ballyhoo Lions Club.

Play a round or sponsor a hole

Get your team together for two days of extreme golfing in scenic Pyramid Valley during the 2010 Aleutian Tundra Golf Classic, Aug. 14 and 15. Games of skill are included along the course and ASFA will provide donation-based concessions again this year. The tournament is a fundraiser for the nonprofit Unalaska Community Broadcasting. Cost for a four-person team is $120. UCB has partnered with the Unalaska Biggest Winner Challenge this year, and participants in the weight-loss program will receive a 20 percent discount. Volunteers are needed to stage the event, and businesses are invited to sponsor a hole during the tournament. Help school defray technology costs

Unalaska School District is recruiting members to serve on its technology committee for school year 2010-2011. Students, parents, community members, teachers, school administrators and school support staff are all invited to join. The committee will work on the district's Technology Use Plan, filed every three years with the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development, Educational Technology. Filing an approved technology plan allows the school district to apply for eRate funds through the federally funded Universal Service Administrative Company, the not-for-profit corporation that administers Universal Service Fund programs for high-cost companies serving rural areas, low-income consumers, rural health care providers, and schools and libraries. The fund helps to provide communities nationwide with affordable telecommunications services. Unalaska School District has received up to 55 percent in eRate funds over the years to cover the cost of telephone and Internet service. Youths invited to junior lifeguard class

Ages 11 to 14 are invited to register for GuardStart: Lifeguarding Tomorrow, an American Red Cross program that prepares future lifeguards. The course instructed by D. Tyrell McGirt will focus on prevention, fitness, response, leadership and professionalism. Classes are 8 a.m. to noon, Mondays through Fridays, Aug. 9-20. PCR hosts co-ed basketball tournament

Pass, shoot, rebound, guard and block during the 3 on 3 outdoor co-ed basketball tournament, 2 p.m. every Friday in August on the courts at Kelty Field. Stop by the PCR or call 581-1297 to register a team and sign a waiver. Team members must be age 16 or older, and each team is required to have at least one female player on its roster.
