Ballyhoo Mountain run draws record numberPublished on July 29th, 2010 By ALBERT BURNHAM
Eager runners take to the trail during the mass start of the 2010 Ballyhoo Run on July 17 in Unalaska. (Courtesy Photo, Pam Aus) July 17 found Unalaskans once again running the grueling 1.8 mile Ballyhoo Mountain trail for the annual community Ballyhoo Run. The trail's 1,600 vertical feet prove a challenge to even the most seasoned runner. This year's run was a great success. There were 50 participants, our largest turnout on record, and the weather held out long enough for everyone to cross the finish line. Standing atop the leader board was the PCR's own Ben Bolock, who broke the previous race record by 26 seconds with his time of 00:24.00 minutes. The previous record of 00:24.26, which was set by Mark Blanning, has stood for 14 years. Congratulations to Brooke Reid who also came close to setting a new youth girls record with a time of 00:25.03, and Blaine Henning who finished on top of the youth boy's category with a time of 00:25.09. The PCR staff implemented several new race features including race packets, music and an end-of-race raffle that participants and spectators enjoyed. Special thanks goes out to all the volunteers who helped make the race a success, especially to Nancy Peterson, Zoya Johnson, Elder Hillier, and Elder Fryer who manned the turnaround points at the top of the mountain. We would also like to thank Aleutian Chiropractic for providing complementary massages to race participants before and after the run. Finally we would like to thank the Department of Public Safety for sending a group of EMTs to the race to take care of any injured runners. Once again, we would like to congratulate all of the participants for completing the race and we look forward to seeing you at future race events. We encourage all of you to sign up for the Second Annual Bobby Johnson Summer Bay Classic which will be held on August 7. Albert Burnham is the youth programs coordinator for the PCR. 2010 Ballyhoo Race Results
