Softball for a causePublished on June 9th, 2010 By FISHERMAN STAFF Unalaskans turned out to remember one of their own and play some good old-fashioned ball during the Taylar Young Memorial Day Softball Tournament on May 28. Forty-six players made up the four teams in the round robin tournament. Captains were Nic Tutiakoff, Jeff Treannie, Troy Lynch and Jim Wilson, whose team took first place. "The tournament was very laidback, participants came out to have fun with friends and family, and to remember Taylar Young," send Ben Bolock, who helped organize the event for the PCR. The tournament was free for players, but donations were welcome. Marion Davis donated $1,000 and Horizon Lines pitched in $500. American President Lines sprung for the concession food sold to raise funds for the scholarship. The event raised $1,500 to fund next year's tournament and support the Taylar Young Scholarship, which this year went to Unalaska senior Felipe Lekanoff. The annual tournament is named for former Unalaska resident Taylar Young, who died at age 16 in Anchorage. Fisherman Staff can be reached at editor@thedutchharborfisherman.com |
