If it wasn't the triple-threat offensive attack of Robert Clay, Mathew Askoak and Tyler Anelon then it was a suffocating defense.

Either way, the Newhalen boys basketball team proved too much for King Cove in a Class 1A regional championship game Friday night in Sand Point.

Newhalen pulled away from the T-Jacks 62-47 behind double-figure scorers Askoak (21), Anelon (17) and Clay (11), all three of whom were selected to the Class 1A All-State Team.

More so, the Malemutes held Class 1A Player of the Year Jonny Samuelson of King Cove to 18 points-13 below his incredible season average.

Newhalen extended its halftime lead to 38-22 midway through the third quarter after Clay drained a 3-pointer. The lead got to be as many as 19 before the T-Jacks attempted a furious comeback.

Back-to-back 3-pointers by Samuelson and a basket by Christian Christianson pulled King Cove as close as 52-47, but Newhalen salted the game away with free throws.

It was the third time Newhalen defeated King Cove this season and the second straight year that they beat the T-Jacks to claim the Aleutian Chain Conference's lone berth to the ASAA state tournament in Anchorage.

Newhalen improved to 17-4 on the season, with key wins over 2A Bristol Bay and 3A Dillingham.

The Malemutes reaped in a ton of attention on the ANI/Alaska Coaches All-State team, with Clay earning first-team honors, Askoak second team and Anelon honorable mention. And Bob Rychnovsky was named Class 1A Boys Coach of the Year.

For King Cove, Samuelson won top individual honors and senior teammate Jordan Hamilton was named honorable mention all-state.

Newhalen will face Russion Mission on March 18 in Anchorage in the opening round of the ASAA state tournament. Last year, the Malemutes marched all the way to the title game before losing to Kalskag.

King Cove won the regional title two years and made it to the Final Four at state.
