High school students of French, German, Japanese, Latin, and Spanish from across the state compete in the annual contest. Events include culture trivia, poetry recitation, dialogues and impromptu speaking. "Foreign language competition is a great opportunity for students to meet new people and expand their horizons by keeping their minds open to different languages and cultures," said Unalaska senior Susana Solis, who earned a gold medal in the Native Speaker, Poetry event. "Competing against bigger schools with thousands of students such as East and Service high schools is a big challenge that we have been able to face year after year, bringing home the best of us." Traveling to the contest is great fun, said sophomore Daisy Alvarado, who earned a gold medal in Spanish Cultural Trivia, Level 2. "Some met the challenge with flying colors and others put forth their best efforts, but all of the participating students brought honor and pride to the school, and had a blast while they did it, a perfect gold, win-win situation," Alvarado said. Team coach Galena Roraback teaches German, Spanish and Russian languages at Unalaska City School. She has taken a team to state competition the past seven years. Members of her Foreign Language Club met every Saturday to train for competition. "She is a great teacher who is always encouraging us to face new challenges," Solis said.
