Unalaskans slurped up about 60 gallons of ice cream smothered in hot fudge, caramel, marshmallow and strawberry sauces at the Preschool Ice Cream Social on Feb. 14

Twelve flavors of the cold treat were served at the eat-all-you-want event, which raised $5,400 for the Unalaska City School preschool program.

Vanilla ice cream and hot fudge topping are the adult favorite, said preschool teacher Susan Carlisle. The children favor the flavors strawberry, cotton candy and birthday cake.

"If you wanted added goodies there were chocolate-covered sunflower seeds, chocolate cookie crumbs, sprinkles, baby M&Ms, white chocolate chips, butter mint chips, mini chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, and chopped pecans or almonds. If you were still not finished you could top it all off with whip cream and maraschino cherries."

Parents of preschoolers sold tickets and donated napkins, cups and toppings. They took tickets, manned the serving tables and poured beverages during the social. Local high school students helped set up, and filled in where needed.

Preschoolers decorated the tables. Each student had a laminated placemat with a print of their feet and hands, plus pictures of them doing classroom activities. Parents received the placemats as keepsakes after the social.

Funds raised will help buy toys, furniture, educational and gross motor curriculum, books and other items for the classroom. Last year's fundraiser purchased a loft, tables, a commercial dishwasher, computers and computer software for the program.

The young students have been working hard to make thank you notes to individuals and businesses that supported the event.

"It is important for them to know that a lot of people help make our school room a great place to come and learn," Carlisle said.
