Native leadership scholarship available

The Native American Political Leadership Program has extended its full scholarship to the upcoming summer semester, a news release says. Qualified Native American, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian students will have the opportunity to attend the George Washington University's Semester in Washington program with students from around the country. The scholarship will continue to cover our core courses (six credits), housing, airfare, and a stipend upon arrival. Program dates are June 5 to Aug. 2 and the deadline to apply is March 15.

We have attached a brief flyer with more information and strongly encourage you to make this scholarship opportunity available to as many students as you can.

Students can apply directly at www.naplp.gwu.edu. They should indicate their desire to apply for the summer 2010 program.

State parks' 40th anniversary photo contest

The Alaska Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation was established in 1970, the same year that Chilkat, Kachemak Bay, Chugach and Denali State Parks were created by the legislature. In celebration of the 40th anniversary of the division as well as these four parks, DPOR is holding a photo contest. Six photos will be selected and used to create 18 inch by 24 inch full color anniversary posters which will be distributed throughout the state. Entries should be high quality images taken of or within any state park managed area during any season and from any year. The deadline is March 1. Young Native writers contest provides scholarships

The Holland & Knight Charitable Foundation Inc. is making funding available for the Young Native Writers Essay Contest, which allows Native American high school students to write about their experiences and their history.

Five first-place winners will be chosen to receive scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $5,000, and will be flown to Washington, D.C., to visit the National Museum of the American Indian and other prominent sites.

Eligible applicants include Native American and Alaska Native individuals who are enrolled members of a state-or federally-recognized tribe and who are also enrolled in high schools or alternative schools, or are home-schooled.

Denali Commission offers internships

Applications for the Denali Commission's 2010 Summer Internship Program are now available. The Denali Commission is offering paid summer internships open to all undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in the areas of health, energy, and management. To be considered for the 2010 summer program, applications must be received by March 15.

Census art competition seeks ideas

The National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) art competition is a national art competition sponsored by the NCAI. If you are an American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian student, the NCAI art competition may be for you! If you want to enter, register your artwork, and mail it to us by Feb. 19.

All artwork must relate to the theme, "2010 Census: Our People. Our Nations. Our Future." Winners will be announced March 15.

Call for submissions from artists

The Alaska State Council on the Arts announces a Call for Art for the State of Alaska Contemporary Art Bank, a collection of artworks loaned to state offices and public spaces.

Alaska Artists are invited to submit images of interior artwork to be selected for the Alaska Contemporary Art Bank. This call is open to Alaska Artists only. Submission Deadline: Feb. 28.

Search opens for Alaska poets past 50

Entries are now being accepted for regional winners in the 18th annual National Senior Poets Laureate Poetry Competition for American poets age 50 and older in which the first Alaska Senior Poet Laureate is sought. Deadline is June 30.

Winning poems of state senior poets laureate will be named in July, following which they advance to final rounds of competition from which the winner of $500 and the 2010 National Senior Poet Laureate title will be announced around Sept. 1. Alaska has never had a Senior Poet Laureate. Winner of the 2009 National Senior Poet Laureate Award was Patricia Frolander, 66, rancher from Sundance, Wyo.

Co-sponsors Vera-Jane Goodin Schultz and Wanda Sue Parrott founded the contest administered by Amy Kitchener's Angels Without Wings Fdn. in 1993. The 2009 winners can be seen in Golden Words Anthology, along with rules for the 2010 Senior Poets Laureate Contest, at www.amykitchenerfdn.org.

Training in Anchorage

NAIHC will hold an "Admissions & Occupancy/Collections & Compliance/Tenant Accounts" training in Anchorage Feb. 23-25. AAHA (Association of Alaska Housing Authorities) has worked with NAIHC in the development of the training to ensure that it is Alaska-relevant.

The training will be held in HUD's Anchorage Field Office located at 3000 C St., Suite 401 Anchorage 99503. There is no charge for this course but registration is limited so if you are interested in attending please register ASAP. Anchorage Museum seeks art entries

The Anchorage Museum announces a call for entries for the "All Alaska Juried Exhibition XXXIII." This popular biennial juried art exhibition was established more than 30 years ago to encourage the creation of new works by Alaska artists in all media. The exhibition will be on view May 22 through Oct. 10 at the Anchorage Museum.

Deadline for digital submissions is March 2. The exhibition will be juried by Michael Darling, the Seattle Art Museum's Jon and Mary Shirley curator of modern and contemporary art. Interested artists can download the prospectus at www.anchoragemuseum.org.

Search for Native American Poet Laureate

Entries are now being accepted in the First White Buffalo Native American Poet Laureate poetry contest. The winning poem will receive a $100 cash award. Native American ancestry is not a prerequisite; good writing in the voice of the Indian Spirit is necessary. Deadline for entries is Feb. 28.
